Gardening shouldn’t leave you in pain. Thankfully, preventing back injuries during gardening is possible. Below are 4 preventive measures and various types of chiropractic modalities we offer at Balance Chiropractic & Rehab.

Let’s get started!

  1. Warm-Up

Warming up before gardening may seem to be irrelevant to many of you but the benefits that it can bring to your body are exemplary. Try some stretching exercises, a brisk walk, or Yoga for a few minutes before digging, pulling weeds, and harvesting this summer and fall. By preparing your muscles for work, they will be warm, more elastic, and ready for work!

  1. Do Not Twist Your Back

Twisting your back can harm you severely. Keep everything that you require within your reach. While using a lifting, digging, carrying, pushing or pulling make sure to keep your spine in line, your hips flexed, and your knees bent to allow your muscle to be ready to do the work that is needed and your body posture in check. Keep your back straight and arms close to the sides of your body. By reaching and pulling and pushing with your arms closer to your body, you will prevent over twisting your trunk, and over extending your back which can inflame your lower back joints. If you do happen to have a flair up of you lower back, hips, knees, or feet. Don’t hesitate to give us a call. We have many different modalities that we can use to keep you working hard, and enjoying your garden.

  1. Use proper tools

Gardening needs way more than just your hands. Using appropriate tools will protect you from a back, or joint injury. Always use tools, which allow you to stand straight while you hold them. If you are not using the right gardening tool, you are at risk for injury.

  1. Take Breaks to Rest

Staying in the same position for a long time is a sure way for your muscles to shorten and possibly spasm. Your body needs rest and light stretching if you are working for extended periods of time. Take small breaks while gardening and change your posture to take the stress off your joints to relax your muscles. Try to lightly stretch muscles during the break as it will prevent back pain or injuries from occurring.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Remember to drink plenty of fluids! The weather is hot and humid this time of year. You need water or an electrolyte drink to stay hydrated to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke and to decrease the chances of muscle sprain and strain. When you are not hydrated enough muscles become reactive, inflamed and tight. Pay attention to how thirsty you are, it’s easy to get caught up in a task and not eat or drink enough during the day.
