Introduction to E-Rickshaw
The e-rickshaw is a convenient mode of transportation that uses electric power instead of fossil fuels. Also known as electric rickshaws, e-tuk tuks or rewa, these three-wheeled passenger vehicles run on a lithium-ion battery. E-rickshaws have become ubiquitous in many Indian cities as they offer a green alternative to cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws.

History and Evolution

The idea of converting cycle rickshaws into electric vehicles was first conceived in the late 1990s. However, it was in 2010 that e-rickshaw started becoming commercially popular after the government brought them under a specific category of motorized vehicles. In the initial stages, most E-Rickshaw used lead-acid batteries and basic controllers. Over time, manufacturers improved the design with lithium-ion batteries that last longer on a single charge and more efficient motor-controllers. Today's e-rickshaws can attain speeds up to 25 kmph and travel 50-80 km after a full charge, depending on the payload and driving conditions.

Benefits of E-Rickshaws

The primary benefits of e-rickshaws stem from their electric powertrain which makes them environment-friendly. They don't consume fossil fuels or emit tailpipe pollution, making them suitable for public transportation in crowded cities. E-rickshaws are also cost-effective to operate compared to auto-rickshaws as electricity works out cheaper than CNG or gasoline on a per-kilometer basis. Another major advantage is their silent operation which doesn't cause noise pollution in residential areas. Being electric, e-rickshaws have very low maintenance requirements and fewer moving parts to replace. This translates to significant savings over the vehicle's lifetime.
