There is nothing quite like surfing down the pavement on a classic scooter. Out of all the ride on toys available on the market today, the scooter is likely the least changed from the day it was first introduced. The overall design of the scooter has stayed the same, but newer features include 3 and 4-wheeled models for younger riders as well as several models of electric scooter.

For the youngest scooter enthusiasts, models such as the 3-in-1 My First Scooter by Ozzboz are ideal. These scooters start out with four wheels for maximum stability. As the child's confidence increases with their sense of balance, 4 wheels can turn to 3 wheels and then to 2. This bright chunky scooter is suitable for toddlers from 2 years onwards. Another great option for scooter-riding tots is the wide selection of 3 wheeled scooters featuring cartoon characters, such as the Peppa Pig Tri scooter. The robust design of this scooter, with wide wheels, grippy footplate and steel frame make it a great scooter for little ones still learning to balance.

The Mini Micro T-bar scooter is also a 3 wheeled scooter for children 3 to 5, but a paired down, sleeker version of the scooters designed for little tots. No over-sized wheels or cartoon characters are found on this scooter. Available in several colours, the Mini Micro scooter was developed with the help of medical experts, and has a unique steering design that encourages the children to use  scooter for kids their bodies and lean to steer. A Maxi Micro T-bar scooter is also available for children 6 to 10.

All of the three wheeled scooters are wonderful ways for small children to get outside and get exercise. The extra stability inherent in three wheeled designs allows smaller children to gain confidence and progress quickly in terms of both balance and coordination as they surf down the pavement.

For older children and those that have mastered 3 wheeled scooters, there are a host of 2 wheel models available. The Micro Sprite scooter is a great lightweight scooter suitable for those aged 6 through to adult. Fabulous as both a toy and a commuting vehicle, this scooter has a rear wheel guard/spring break, and folds easily for storage. There are of course also two wheeled scooters with character designs, including ones sporting decals featuring Hello Kitty, Toy Story characters, Hannah Montana and Disney Fairies.

Variations on the standard 2 wheeled scooter include the Rocket Xtreme scooter with 12" pneumatic tyres, hand brakes and an extra-wide foot plate with lots of space for comfort or tricks. This scooter is suitable for riders from 5 years onwards. Another slightly different scooter is the Razor Spark scooter. Designed for children from 8 years onwards, and available in different colours, this scooter is suitable as a toy, commuting vehicle or trick scooter and comes complete with a spark cartridge. To activate the sparks, kids simply kick back on the rear bar and add an extra charge to tricks and turns!

There are also several models of electric scooters, with and without seats, available. The Razor E100 Electric scooter has a quiet belt-driven motor powered by two 12V batteries, kick-start for added safety, thumb throttle and is suitable for children from 8 years. The Razor E100S is similar to the E100 with the addition of a removable seat. Razor also makes a retro-inspired Pocket Mod 24V electric scooter. For ages 13 years and up, this scooter modelled after a classic Italian design can reach speeds of up to 15 mph.

Wonderful forms of exercise, scooters provide children with a creative and physical outlet and can function as commuting vehicles as well as toys. Scooters can go just about anywhere a bicycle can, but have the added usefulness of being foldable and easily carried and stored. With all these benefits, scooters for kids are a great choide of present for kids of any age.
