Gynecomastia is a physical condition caused by hormone imbalance, where a male’s breast tissue swells or enlarges more than the normal size. It usually occurs in boys going through puberty or old age men. Though this condition is not fatal at any point in time, it may lead to social embarrassment for the person suffering from it.

In this blog, Dr. Dushyanth Kalva, the best plastic surgeon in Hyderabad at Inform Clinics, discusses what causes this condition and how one can get rid of it. Keep scrolling to know more.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The condition of enlarged breasts in men is mainly caused due to an imbalance between the level of male (testosterone) and female (estrogen) in a male’s body. In simple words, everybody produces both hormones in a certain amount. While a female’s body produces more estrogen, a male’s body produces more testosterone.

Gynecomastia is a condition where the volume of estrogen increases in the male’s body, which results in breast tissue growth in men.

This may happen in the following cases:

  • Hormone imbalance during puberty
  • Low level of testosterone production in old age
  • A high volume of estrogen in a newborn’s body is transferred through the mother’s placenta.
  • Hormone imbalance due to obesity
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Liver or kidney disease.

How can Gynecomastia be Treated?

Though gynecomastia is a condition that may get better on its own, in some cases, treatment may be required. In such cases, either of the two treatments is suggested:

  • Medication for hormone imbalance
  • Surgery to remove extra breast fat and tissue.

Surgery of Gynecomastia

The surgery for gynecomastia is a small procedure that takes an hour or a half. It is done with general anesthesia and involves almost no risk. Here is how the procedure goes:

  • The patient will first be administered general anesthesia.
  • Once the patient is unconscious, the doctor will mark the area that has to be removed.
  • After this, the doctor will make a small incision about 1cm near the nipple.
  • Then the surgeon will use the liposuction technique to remove the extra tissue using the suction technique. If the tissue size is small, the doctor may also use a surgical tool to perform the surgery.
  • Once the extra breast tissue is removed, the incision will be stitched back and secured with gauze.

The recovery may take a few months; until then, the patient will have to take care of certain things. During the recovery, the patient can visit the surgeon in case of discomfort.
