How to create a routine and its importance of it:

In today’s world, every day it is incredibly easy to be swept up into a cycle of wanting to do more every day but not having enough time. We often dedicate too much time to unnecessary tasks and then lose time for important things such as meal times with family or sleep. Establishing a daily routine is incredibly important to arrange daily activities in a more time-efficient way as well as help achieve your goals, big or small. 

A routine does not have to be complicated but it does require some discipline and consistency to follow it. The first thing you should consider is what are your priorities and how can you incorporate them into your daily routine. Examples could be wanting to work out more, having more time to write, or even creating a healthier sleep schedule. After listing what you would like to include you must create a plan that is easy enough to stay motivated to follow but is also strict enough that you can follow it. Lastly, it’s important to remember to have fun with the activities you include in your daily routine and reward yourself. 

It can be very challenging to do the simplest of tasks, especially in the morning, however, creating a system will improve your overall well-being and ability to pace yourself during busy times. I always suggest beginning your day by simply making your bed first thing in the morning because then you can start your day with an accomplishment. 

The importance of accountability: 

To understand the importance of accountability, we must first understand its meaning and role in our lives. In the words of Vishwas Chavan, “Accountability and self-responsibility are critical to our success in personal, professional, and public life. However, we often look for those character traits in others, rather than inculcating them in ourselves.” 

Being able to hold oneself accountable is a skill that goes hand in hand with being responsible, taking initiative as well as maintaining integrity among others. Only when you possess this skill yourself and can take ownership of your own actions can you begin to look outwards with your expectations. 

Whether you are working on a team project or dealing with challenges in your personal life, accountability is a must to make any progress. The role it plays in your life varies from situation to situation, however, it is on you to measure and reflect on your responsibilities and actions in a way that helps you to grow as a person. For example, if you are doing a project for school, you may be held accountable for completing certain components of the project by your teammates. To make sure you get your work for the project done, you may create a schedule or plan to follow. On the other hand, let’s say you are fighting with your best friend because you made a mistake and overshared personal information that you were trusted with. Accountability in this case would be owning up to your actions, accepting your mistake, and taking active steps to resolve the situation. 

It is a lot easier to take responsibility for your actions and words when someone is there to support and push you, but that will not always be the case. The next time you find yourself digging for excuses, try to think about the what and why in your situation. Think about what you are doing and what needs to be done, and ask yourself, “why” to figure out your course of action. The next best step is to write it down, so you have it in front of you, or explain your plan to a trusted person so that you can start making a conscious effort to develop accountability in your life.

How to be a balanced person:

I always say to my clients you need to have a social outlet, a creative outlet, and a physical exercise outlet. While it may seem difficult at first to devote enough time to these three things along with work, it becomes easier with practice. Making sure you practice these three things on top of work and free time will help you become a more balanced person and increase your well-being. 

Having a social outlet is what comes easiest to most people because spending time with your friends or family is fun. What is more difficult is making sure you don’t spend too much time socializing and that you are surrounding yourself with good people who support you. 

Secondly, a creative outlet can look like anything from taking a dance class to making TikToks. What is important is that you are allowing yourself to create something without the pressure of having to be perfect. 

Lastly, a physical outlet does not mean you have to work out every single day, but studies show that exercise does help reduce stress. So, make sure at the very least you take yourself on a walk and get some sunshine. 

I want to remind you to focus on today. Tasks can become so overwhelming if you think about how to accomplish them all in one moment. Instead, focus on the present and go about your day one thing at a time. If you are hitting a wall with work, switch gears and read a book and then return. Being a balanced person also means knowing your limits. If you know that you cannot accomplish something today, then forgive yourself and focus on which of the outlets you can participate in.
