Sailing and Spain go together hand in hand, since this is the home for some of the most famous stretches of sand in the Mediterranean, such as the Balearic Islands, the Tenerife Islands and Costa del Sol or Costa Brava. Big cities such as Barcelona or Valencia with their strong cultural life and economic appeal further enhance the touristic potential of the country.

Then it comes as no surprise that, out of all the countries in the Mediterranean, Spain is the most appreciated by western yacht charter tourists for its location, its fine weather and low prices. An indication of this factor is not only the large numbers visiting here every year, but the fact that many of them actually return to purchase a holiday or a second home in Spain, generating a competitive and energetic market, good for investing.

Sailing and yacht charter in particular are held in high regard in Spain, especially in the sunny Balearic Islands where large numbers of German, British and Scandinavians come to sail. That's why you'll see that almost every large bay in the Balearics is lined up with fancy marinas rent a yacht in Tenerife which offer special yacht charter packages and discounts throughout the season from April to October.

Apart from the main island of Mallorca, also very popular is the smaller island of Ibiza which has gained notoriety as an arty Mecca thanks to its carefree and wild atmosphere which draws in people from all over the world. Here too you can spot yachts anchored in the small gulfs and inlets, their immaculate white contrasting beautifully with the deep blue of the Mediterranean.

Further to the south, near the African coast, you'll find another Spanish territory, the Canaries Archipelago, a series of volcanic islands which seem so outlandish and lunar with their arid landscape and scarce vegetation. However, they are a favored location for sailors and yacht charters since this is the main departure point for cross-Atlantic voyages.

If these destinations have whetted your appetite for this Mediterranean destination, then there are a few things you should be aware of when chartering a yacht in Spain. Anyone in the country who wants to operate a yacht longer than 4m or with an engine that has a higher output than 10kW needs a sailing license. While locals apply for them in the country, foreign tourists can provide evidence of their permit acquired in their own country and evidence of former sailing experience to the Maritime Authority. They will then provide you with an equivalent which allows you to sail a boat legally while in Spanish waters.

The good news is that most Spain yacht charter companies will take care of these documents for you before you even get in the country and simply had over the papers to you when you arrive. Some do it for free, while others charge a nominal fee. Make sure you ask ahead.
