Hemp, Cannabis, or Marijuana?

With an industry growing faster than the plant definitions can keep up and many cannabis consumers are confused about where all these different cannabinoids actually come from. Is hemp the same as cannabis? Is hemp the same as marijuana?

Simply, both hemp and marijuana plants are the same species, cannabis, the main difference lies in how much of a certain cannabinoid CBD and/or THC each contains. There are differences important to understand for legality's sake when we’re talking about the mild difference in the sourcing of the cannabinoid delta-9. The following is a simple break-down:

  • Cannabis is a plant in the Cannabis genus, a species of the Cannabaceae family, this includes marijuana and hemp, however…
  • Marijuana is the cannabis plant that is allowed to contain more than 0.3% THC by volume in states where medical and/or recreational cannabis is legalized.
  • Hemp is the cannabis plant that was made federally legal through the 2018 farm bill but cannot contain more than 0.3% THC.

So basically, marijuana and hemp are just two different names for cannabis, a type of flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family. While science doesn’t differentiate between “hemp” and “marijuana,” the law does. Legally, the key difference between the two is the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content. Remember the cannabis plant we refer to as hemp is grown to have less than 0.3% THC, the limit by federal law, and when the word marijuana is used it is in the context of plants with THC higher than 0.3% (sometimes as high as 40%).

What is Delta-9?

Delta-9 THC is one of the many cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and is the one cannabinoid responsible for the undeniable love that SOCIETY has for this cannabinoid-rich plant. Cannabinoids are the active compounds found in cannabis that offer a variety of effects, varying from relaxation, to focus, and energy, to sleep.

To date over 100 cannabinoids have been identified, all with different benefits, however, it’s Delta-9 that has won over the world with its euphoric effects. Until recently only those that reside in states where weed is legalized or folks that choose to go against the system could enjoy the high of delta-9, but we’re here today to let you know that you can now get delta-9 THC delivered straight to your door LEGALLY. How can we offer this? Keep reading to learn more about the legal cannabinoid delta-9 THC.

What is Hemp-Derived Delta 9?

Just as with the alternative cannabinoids delta-8, delta-10, THC-O, and HHC, the cannabinoid delta-9 listed on SOCIETY’s Plant’s online shop is extracted from hemp plants. To derive means to obtain, and in this case, we are obtaining the desired plant compound, delta-9 from the hemp plant.

How is Hemp-Derived Delta 9 made?

While there are at least 3 different methods for extracting the delta-9 cannabinoid from hemp, only one is clean and offers you a quality product that you can feel good consuming for health or recreational purposes. The best process to produce Delta-9 involves extracting cannabinoids directly from hemp plants which is a 3-step process, which includes, step one catalyzation, then filtration or washing, followed by three distillation, and testing. Quality products such as ours will always be third-party tested to assure they’re free of contaminants and residual solvents that could be left over from the extraction process. You can access all of our lab reports here on one page to feel assured our products have been tested for compliance. You can find more in-depth information about the 3-step extraction in our article “ALTERNATIVE CANNABINOIDS: DELTA-8, DELTA-9, DELTA-10, AND THCO”.

Commonly asked DELTA-9 THC Questions

Is Delta-9 Considered Synthetic?

No, D9 is not synthetic, it is a compound that comes directly from the hemp plant. However, in full transparency, due to the way they are bred hemp plants contain far less delta-9 than their counterpart marijuana, because of this the extraction process does utilize synthetic solvents, but in the filtration process, these solvents are “washed” out of the final product. While this is not a perfect scenario until full legalization of all cannabis products occurs this is the safest way to obtain these alternative cannabinoids which many benefit from.

What are the Benefits of Delta-9 THC?

The health benefits of Delta 9 are almost identical to consuming THC flower medicinally. 1:1 Delta-9:CBD + THC Gummies created with hemp-derived cannabinoids have the ability to increase appetite, induce a deeper sleep, quell chronic pain, and ease stress and anxiety, and under clinical supervision, they may be ideal for patients experiencing PTSD, fibromyalgia, nerve disorders, depression, and insomnia.

Are D9 THC Gummies Safe?

It’s important to be informed on where your Delta cannabinoid products come from, how they are manufactured, and why you’re consuming them. The safety concerns lie in the chemicals used in the extraction process; it is critical to only consume Delta products that have been lab-tested at an accredited lab to ensure they have been purged of all chemicals and contaminants and are safe for consumption. Again, SOCIETY’s Plant proudly displays lab reports on our “Lab Results” page.

Is Delta 9-THC really legal?

Yep! It is! Just like Delta-8 THC, D9 comes from the cannabis plant, which we just learned includes hemp. Hemp-derived Delta-9 THC is legal because it is hemp-derived, and NOT derived from high-THC marijuana plants. Since the percentage of the Delta-9 cannabinoid is less than the limits of the law which is 0.3% Delta9 by weight, this allows the hemp-derived Delta-9 to be legally shipped directly to your home.

What does Delta-9 feel like?

Delta-8 often has an “Indica” effect on consumers, while Delta-9 gummies are more like a hybrid. Some have said the SOCIETY’s GOLD-IX Delta9 1:1 THC: CBD is the “giggly gummies” in the shop.  The experiences of consuming a SOCIETY’s GOLD-IX 1:1 THC: CBD gummy do vary depending on the person, but most agree they are similar to about a 6mg dose of a THC edible. The only difference is that SOCIETY’s Delta9 gummies have 12mg of hemp-derived THC and also 15mg of CBD in each gummy!  This combination makes for a fun and mild high Let’s just say this gummy offers a solution for medical users who do not currently live in a legal state.

Which is Stronger Delta-8 or Delta-9?

Delta-8 is a potent cannabinoid that is most frequently used to deal with pain, inflammation, and insomnia. The calming effect of delta-8 will last longer than other cannabinoids and be more sedating. However, Delta-9 THC is an amazing stress reliever you can use during the day to take the edge off and will offer that euphoric high as if you are consuming THC from recreational cannabis, but it won’t offer the same pain relief as Delta-8. If you don’t want to experience the euphoric feeling of these alternative cannabinoids, then SOCIETY’s Plant CBD gummies can calm inflammation and give you a feeling of peace.

What’s the difference between Delta 8,9, and 10?

Delta-8, Delta-9, and Delta-10 are all forms of THC. The chemical structure of Delta-8 and Delta-9 and Delta-10 are almost the same—except for the chain-like bond of atoms, which occurs on the eighth carbon atom for Delta-8, the ninth for Delta-9, and the tenth for Delta-10. All these Delta varieties offer psychoactive effects to varying degrees with Delta-9 being the traditional “weed high”.

Delta-9 Sleepiness Effects

Is Delta-9 Indica or Sativa?

The terms indica, and sativa are ways to categorize cannabis cultivars based on how their vibe. Indica is often described as the strain that’ll have you melting into the couch, or  “in da’couch”, this feeling is also referred to as a body high due to the heaviness your body may feel. Indicas are great for a “Netflix & Binge” kind of night that recharges your social, and productive batteries.

Sativa is more of an invigorating head high, that may help you to channel new ideas, and thoughts, and even inspire you to create or at the very least get chatty with some friends and giggle. Sativa strains are usually daytime friendly and ease the feelings of stress, and anxiety while promoting focus, and even clarity.

Then there’s the hybrid of the two, the strains that have been mish-mashed with other strains to create a surprise effect. Hemp Derived Delta-9 fits into that category, many will find it less sedating than delta-8, but not as energizing as delta-10, it is somewhere in the middle with benefits that come from both categories. If you’re looking for an energetic effect check out our King’s Gold-X Delta-10 products, available in gummies, vapes, and flower.

Does Delta-9 make you Sleepy?

The promising aspect of identifying uses of the different cannabinoids is learning which one supports what function. Research on this is slow to catch up with consumer opinions, but hopefully one day more interest will be given to these isolated cannabinoids for purposes of increasing our mental and emotional health, this includes getting enough sleep. Currently, we hear from our customers that delta8 gummies are superior for inducing deep sleep. “Delta8 feels like a warm blanket at the end of the day when I’m the one that needs nurturing”, is the type of comment we receive.

This doesn’t mean delta9 won’t relax you enough to potentially help you sleep, it just means if you are desiring your gummy to send you to dreamland you’re best to reach for SOCIETY’s Plant Gold-Vlll Delta-8 Gummies, available in 25 and 50 mg. Be sure as always to start low, and go slow!

Dosing Delta-9 Gummies

Dosing is a matter of a few different factors; how often you consume, your tolerance, body size, and even rate of digestion, and liver function. Each person’s biology is different so the best way to start is to start low and go slow. SOCIETY’s D9 gummies start at 12mg with 15mg of CBD to counterbalance the cannabinoid, the high you’ll experience is usually mild and chill, with a general sense of well-being but it has been stated to start with half, maybe even 1/4th of a cube and move up from there. CannaMoms, like Weed Mom, and High Society Mama promote helpful activities like journaling after consuming cannabis-based products to assess your unique tolerance to cannabinoids. Whatever your method we advocate for consuming consciously and with the intention to get the most healing benefits from your plant medicine.

Hemp-Derived Delta-9 vs. THC

Hemp-derived delta9 THC is THC. Remember what we stated above about the sources of THC from the variety of cannabis plants? This information is vital to understanding the differences between THC sources. Hemp plants DO contain THC just in a lesser amount than marijuana plants. This does come with limitations like the inability to access enough THC from hemp plants for medicinal use by inhalation, smokable hemp flower is ideal for the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD). Currently, the only way to obtain hemp-derived D9 THC is through the extraction process.

How long do the effects of Delta-9 last?

Again, this has to do with the person’s specific biology however a baseline is 3-4 hours based on what we hear from our community. Factors that alter this is the amount taken, the transit time through digestion, and the person’s body size.

Is 5 mg of Delta-9 THC a lot?

Whether a 5mg dose of D9 is a lot is subjective to the person. Our delta9 gummies are 12mg and we advise starting with a half-dose (sometimes less), making your dose 6mg. We are comfortable saying for many that would be just enough to ease anxiety, relax tense muscles, and boost the mood without a high that’ll throw your day off. For others, 12mg would be needed for the same chill, and if you want a full high where you’re giggly and carefree you may a little more than 12mg. We never suggest jumping to a higher dose thinking you’ll have a better experience because it could lead to anxiety, instead start low, and go slow.
