Unlike other major cities in the us, new york's subway trains run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However,  with the system’s advanced age – 28 stations date back to 1904, and signals from the 1930s are still in use today – it’s susceptible to delays and breakdowns. Construction is often scheduled for nights and weekends, so weekend subway travel can be challenging. Countdown clocks are in every station, telling you when the next train is coming.

I don’t have an off-shore bank account at my disposal so I ‘m going to wait to see that show until the theater looks more like a ghost town and less like a lady gaga concert. Between the tkts booth in times square, the today tix phone app, and broadway roulette, you can always find cheap broadway tickets in new york city. Just get in the cab and tell the driver where to go once he or she starts driving. This way, they have to take you wherever you want to go. Never tell a taxi driver where you’re going before you enter a cab. And I’m not just talking about michelin star rated restaurants either.

You just have to resign yourself to that fact, unless you move here (and maybe not even then), you’re only going to see a fraction of what you hope to see. All of nyc’s top sights and museums have bathrooms for visitors. The same goes if you’re at a restaurant or cafe for lunch or a coffee break. The new york citypass, on the other hand, gives you access to 5 attractions (2 fixed and 3 of your choice from a set list) over 9 days. This pass is great if you want to sightsee at your own pace while mixing in other activities and experiences around the city. If you can, mix in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

New york is an expensive city so it’s always a good budget-stretcher to look for some free things to do in the city. I love just wandering the streets and exploring neighbourhoods or people watching in central park. But there are others things you can do without forking over cash. Art galleries in chelsea will often dish out free wine and cheese while you browse artwork.

But this plan never fails and I always get home safe and sound. We are a fast-paced city that is full of stressed out, high strung individuals who have copious amounts of caffeine running Travelling to New York tips through their veins. So don’t mess with us as we speed walk down the sidewalk (big new york city tourist mistake). This also means that you can’t cross the street just because a pedestrian sign says it’s safe. Drivers in new york are crazy and treat driving laws more like irrelevant suggestions.

Getting on the wrong train is not ideal, but it happens and at worst you’ll lose some time. Simply get off at the next stop and hop on the train going in the opposite direction (or follow the directions on your phone). Look at the light on top of the cab, if the middle light is on then the cab is  free to hail.
